Welcome to Shama Academy
Background

Shama Academy, at Ihwa Village in Tetu west division of Nyeri South district, Kenya, has been in operation for nineteen years. The school is in a quiet environment, 10 kms west of Nyeri town. It is a mixed day and boarding school with an enrolment of about 400 pupils in both nursery and primary sections.

Facilities

Shama Academy is built on 7 acres of land, with adequate space for facilities associated with a school of its standards. Classrooms, kitchen, dining complex, hostels and staff houses are ultra-modern, built with safety and comfort in mind. The school has well-serviced vehicles dedicated to its services. Starting 2008, transport for nursery and Std. 1 and 2 pupils was made free, a facility that has been a welcome relief to both pupils and the parents.

Management

The school is managed with a strong Christian bias. An English religious service is offered on Sunday morning, and our pupils participate in activities at the local churches. Smoking by staff and visitors is prohibited in the compound. The head teacher is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school, assisted by a Deputy, while overall management is by the Directors (proprietors), and an Advisory Board comprised of carefully chosen parents and teachers.

Performance

Our motto is "Education For A Better Future". The high standard of tuition has been confirmed by the excellent results of KCPE exams for the past years. All the candidates go to good secondary schools, including Starehe Boys, Alliance, Mangu, Nyeri, Kagumo, and Bishop Gatimu, among others. The 2008 Standard 8 class has been performing very well in the inter-school exams, and we are confident that they will do equally well in the KCPE exams.

Tuition

We have qualified and dedicated teachers who offer instructions in line with Ministry of Education Guidelines. In addition, French lessons are offered to all pupils, while Computer lessons are limited to boarding pupils. Counselling of pupils is done by qualified teachers, and we bring in experts to prepare Std. 7 and 8 for the national examinations. Free tuition is offered on Saturdays to pupils from Std. 5 to 8.

At Shama, we have a policy of "All Work and No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy". Enough time is therefore set aside for sports and leisure. Significant improvements are being made to the sports facilities. Our pupils also go on educational tours to places such as The Lake Nakuru National Park, National Museums of Kenya and Snake Park, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Parliament, Animals Orphanage and Safari Walk, Sagana Power Generation Plant, Gathuthi Tea Factory, Olkaria Geo-thermal Power Station, William Holden Game Sanctuary (Nanyuki), among others.

Our goal is to give back to society an individual who is well rounded, socially and intellectually. As such we also engage our children in Community Service, and in 2008 they participated in the Kenya Orphans Walk, during which they won a number of trophies. Such activities will continue in future, and we thank parents who support us on these noble causes. We also welcome ideas on similar activities that we could get involved in.

Boarding

Shama has ultra-modern boarding facilities. We ensure maximum isolation, comfort, security and privacy of our boarders and staff. Pupils sleep in cubicles and during the cold season, a fire is provided in the common rooms. There are house parents (mother/father) who spend the night with the children. There are study rooms next to the girls hostels for evening coaching and for use by pupils in the upper classes.

Boarders in nursery to Std. 3 enjoy free laundry.

Pupils of Std. 1 to 3 who wish to be boarders during the week (weekly boarders), and to go home for the weekend, are given the opportunity. As such the child comes on the school bus on Monday and goes home on Friday.
